The Japanese approach to skincare is particularly effective in these situations. Rather than aggressive regeneration and using many powerful products at once, it focuses on gentleness, patience, and restoring skin comfort. This approach does not try to “force” the skin to improve—it creates the conditions in which the skin can regain its balance.

What is the hydrolipidic barrier?

The hydrolipidic barrier is the skin’s natural protective layer. It is composed of lipids, sebum, natural moisturizing factor components, and cells from the stratum corneum. Its role is to retain water in the skin and protect it from external factors such as pollution, wind, frost, UV radiation, and irritating cosmetic ingredients.

When the barrier functions properly, the skin is more resilient, less reactive, and better able to tolerate daily skincare. When it is damaged, the skin loses water more quickly and becomes dry, sensitive, and prone to irritation.

Symptoms of a damaged hydrolipidic barrier

A weakened skin barrier can manifest in many ways. The most common symptoms are tightness after washing, stinging when applying cosmetics, redness, dryness, flaking, roughness, or sudden reactivity to products that were previously well tolerated.

The skin may also look tired, dull, and dehydrated despite the use of cream. Some people may experience paradoxical sebum overproduction—leaving the skin simultaneously oily and dehydrated. This is a sign that the skin is trying to prevent moisture loss.

If symptoms are severe, persistent, painful, or accompanied by inflammation, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. Skincare can support the skin, but it is not a substitute for a medical diagnosis.

Why does standard skincare often make the problem worse?

Seeing their skin deteriorate, many people reach for even more cosmetics: stronger serums, acids, retinoids, cleansing products, masks, and exfoliants. Unfortunately, if the hydrolipidic barrier is damaged, this strategy can exacerbate the problem.

Skin with a compromised barrier needs rest above all else. Excessive exfoliation, intensive cleansing, alcohol-based toners, heavily perfumed cosmetics, or applying several active ingredients at once can increase stinging, dryness, and reactivity.

Another common mistake is skipping cream when you have oily skin. Even skin that produces a lot of sebum can be dehydrated and have a weakened barrier. In such cases, it needs light but effective hydration.

The Japanese approach: gentleness and hydration

Japanese skincare focuses on strengthening the skin through gentle, consistent steps. Instead of quick interventions, it emphasizes daily care. Instead of aggressive cleansing, it uses gentle pollution removal. Instead of many active products, it focuses on layered hydration and protection.

Three elements are key: gentle cleansing, intensive hydration, and sealing in the skincare with a cream that reduces water loss. In the morning, SPF is added because UV radiation can worsen the skin’s condition and further weaken the barrier.

In practice, this means a simple routine that does not overwhelm the skin but gradually restores its comfort.

Key ingredients that support the skin barrier

When caring for skin with a weakened barrier, look for ingredients that hydrate, soothe, and support the stratum corneum’s lipid layer.

Ceramides

Ceramides are a natural component of the skin barrier. They help strengthen its structure and reduce water loss. They are particularly important for dry, sensitive, irritated, or reactive skin.

Humectants

Humectants are ingredients that bind water in the stratum corneum. They include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, betaine, and amino acids. In Japanese skincare, they are often found in lotions, essences, and light serums.

Emollients

Emollients help soften the skin and form a layer on its surface that limits moisture loss. They can be particularly helpful in the evening when the skin needs regeneration and comfort.

Soothing ingredients

It is also worth looking for soothing ingredients such as panthenol, allantoin, centella asiatica, rice extract, and ferments. Their role is to reduce discomfort and support the skin during periods of hyperactivity.
